My Favourite Outfit: Kendell
In this series, I ask the contributor to share an image of their favourite outfit – maybe a pair of pants they wore every day, maybe a special party dress – and write about where they were in their life and why this outfit has such significance. Today we welcome Kendell. Despite growing up in the same part of the world and having lots of connections in common (for instance, our dads went to high school together in small town Saskatchewan), we didn’t meet each other until a couple of years ago when she, a devoted country girl, moved to downtown Toronto.
Here is my favourite outfit. Well, my favourite jeans really. I call them my PhD pants, which is fitting because I purchased them for the occasion of my dissertation defense. Some ladies wear dresses to this kind of event. Others wear power suits. I wore PhD pants. I paired them with a blazer and felt comfortable, confident, and even stylish.
There was another reason I purchased PhD pants instead of a dress or power suit for my defense. I am a new mom, and at the time of purchase, my daughter was eight months old. It was time to rid of my stretched out maternity clothes and introduce some fresh items into my wardrobe. Jeans that fit properly were a must. A dress or power suit were not at all essential.
My PhD pants are my first ever pair of Lucky Brand jeans – the Brooke skinny. They are durable, yet soft to the touch, and oh so comfortable. The kind of jeans that stay right where they are supposed to when you sit down and when you get up.
These jeans are my wardrobe staple. As in this picture, I most commonly pair them with my light pink pumps. They are my go-to dynamite combination. Even when I select a slightly wrinkled shirt from my closet, I still look pretty decent.
In this particular photo, I am dressed for Father’s Day family dinner. My husband is behind the camera. My one-year-old daughter looks almost like a director in the sidelines waving her rice cake in the air. The milk she poured down my PhD pants earlier that morning recently dried. Minutes after the photo, we piled into our car and headed off to family dinner. And as always when I wear my PhD pants, I felt comfortable, fairly stylish, and ready for whatever milk spill, baby chasing, or lounging the afternoon might hold.
